How to
Have Guaranteed Courage
What do people with courage do that separates them from others? Here are three tips and a great story to answer that question. Lori Prokop Courage Tip #1 People who live with courage simply and truthfully admit their fear of failure. Lori Prokop Courage Tip #2 Then, once acknowledged, and with the help of a Higher Power and if it makes sense, they consider moving forward in spite of fear. Lori Prokop Courage Tip #3 Often it is past fears programmed into people during childhood that resurface as present day fears. When you feel fear simply ask yourself if this is a fear-based belief from your past. If so, consider healing the fear if it no longer serves you well. This helps to increase courage. Here is a great story which illustrates courage. During his time, Maurice Chevalier was one of the greatest stage performers. Suddenly, in mid-career, before an evening stage performance, Maurice felt extreme nausea, dizziness and inability to focus on cues. He stuttered and missed lines. He tried desperately to recover during his performance this night and for several weeks. His fellow actors attempted to cover up for his faltering. But, Maurice experienced failure, publicly. Dr. Robert Dubois prescribed rest and long walks to repair the damage to his nervous system, yet his inner pain continued. Fear overtook him. Maurice lost all courage and decided, “I am a beaten man. I am a failure. There is no future for me.” To combat this, the doctor suggested that Maurice perform for a small, group of local residents. Maurice responded, “I am too terrified. What guarantee do you have that I won’t stutter or forget my lines?” “There are no guarantees,” said the doctor. “Maurice, you must not be afraid of failing. Fear is never a reason to quit. It is just an excuse. The brave man encounters fear, admits it and goes on despite it.” Maurice experienced countless episodes of fear before going back on stage for the local folks in that little town. But, he found the courage to go on stage despite his fears. He performed well. Satisfaction and happiness came back to him as he realized, “I knew that I had not conquered fear. I simply had the courage to admit that I felt fear and went on in spite of it. And it worked.” From that point on Maurice successfully performed for audiences worldwide. “There have been many moments of fear. My doctor was right. There are no guarantees. But being afraid has never made me want to quit.” Maurice added, “My experience has taught me that if you wait for the perfect moment when all is safe and you have assurances, it may never arrive. Mountains would never be climbed, races never won, dreams never achieved.” So find the courage to be afraid and honestly admit your fears. With the help of a power greater than yourself, find the courage to overcome fear.
